Diplomatica is a product of Diplomatica Global Media LLC, an independent entity, registered in the District of Columbia, and wholly owned by Molly McCluskey. Our team is guided by advisors in the journalism, diplomacy, technology, architecture, urban planning, real estate, and sustainbility fields around the world.
Diplomatica adheres to the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics and a commitment to transparency in funding and reporting. We are supported by reader contributions, co-publishing arrangements, and advertising and/or affiliate agreements which are clearly labeled. We also raise funds through organizing themed events.
We do not accept advertising from embassies or foreign governments. Embassies/governments cannot pay to have their properties featured, nor do we accept payment for Embassy Calendar listings.
We do not use unnamed sources or sources solely “on background.” If someone provides us information and does not want to be named, we will find another source to confirm that information on the record or we won’t print it.
While we do provide, on request, a general overview of interview topic(s) so that sources can prepare, subjects of our reporting do not receive interview questions in advance, nor do we allow them to review our stories before we publish.
We do not cover people or companies where we have a personal conflict. Anything that might give the appearance of a conflict of interest is clearly identified.
We do not accept preconditions for coverage of a story that require us to say certain things, to not report on certain things, or to ignore things we might discover as we’re on diplomatic grounds. We also recognize the sensitive nature of some areas of diplomatic properties we are given access to (such as residences, security procedures, etc.) and will often agree not to photograph certain areas due to security or privacy reasons. Such requests are mutually agreed upon in advance.
Embassies often make available pamphlets or books of the history of their property or other token gift items. These are accepted when they are items not of significant value; contribute to our research; are clearly identified as gifts in the article; and/or are items that are available to all guests of the embassy, not intended to influence reporting. Any reporting that results from grant, fellowship and/or press trip support is clearly identified.
If you have a question or concern about our ethical standards, please let us know.
